Fitter Engine

The Fitter Engine install, maintain, diagnose, repair, and overhaul shipboard propulsion and generating plant and related engine room systems. They work closely with engineers, fitters, electricians, and other maintenance teams to ensure reliable power, propulsion, and auxiliary system operation across all areas of the vessel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, dismantle, assemble, fit, align, and install engine components such as pistons, cylinders, crankshafts, turbochargers, manifolds, fuel pumps, injectors, valves, gaskets, seals, and piping.
  • Fit and align propulsion components, bearings, couplings, propeller shaft assemblies, and vibration-damping systems; ensure proper alignment and operation.
  • Install, service, and test auxiliary systems including pumps, compressors, air start systems, starting motors, batteries, cooling water circuits, seawater cooling, heat exchangers, and associated piping.
  • Service and maintain fuel systems, lubrication systems, oil filtration, filters, belts, hoses, and cooling systems; perform leak checks and preventive maintenance.
  • Fabricate and modify metal components and piping as needed; drill, rivet, bolt, weld (MIG/TIG as allowed by certification), and seal connections; install and test exhaust and intake components.
  • Commission systems after installation or major repairs; verify pressures, temperatures, flow rates, and operational parameters; document start-up results.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues in engine rooms, coordinate with other trades for complete system repair.
  • Assist in dry-dock projects and major engine room overhauls, support other trades during complex restorations or upgrades.

Qualifications& Training

·       Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in marine engineering, mechanical fitting, or equivalent

·       Valid welding/fitter certification authorized by a recognized authority

·       Practical experience with marine diesel engines, generators, propulsion systems, and associated piping and fittings; familiarity with fuel, lubrication, and cooling circuits.

·       Knowledge of stainless steel, steel, and aluminum components used in engine rooms, understanding of marine corrosion prevention.

Language Requirements:

·       Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.

·       Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions inwritten and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.

Physical& Environmental Requirements

  • Physical: Regularly perform manual labor; able to stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate tools; capable of lifting to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: Adequate vision to read gauges, manuals, and work orders; depth perception for precise tasks.
  • Environmental: Work on board a vessel in various weather and sea conditions; exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment; must wear appropriate PPE and be prepared for shift work or on-call needs; able to operate in confined spaces and at heights as required. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is expected to perform duties effectively.

Additional Notes:

  • Candidates must be committed to safety and environmental standards.
  • Work involves physical activity and exposure to challenging environment
