Repair Assistant

The Repairman/Assistant Repairman – Engine/Hotel is a skilled technician responsible for the overhaul, maintenance, and repair of engine room equipment, propulsion and auxiliary systems. This role performs tasks such as welding, lathe work, stainless steel fabrication, and pipe fittings, and may assist with propulsion and other systems as required. The position requires the ability to work independently or as part of a team and to complete work orders issued by the Engine Foreman in a safe and efficient manner. 

 

Essential Duties And Responsibilities 

  • Overhaul and repair pumps and related mechanical systems; perform disassembly, inspection, machining, reassembly, and testing as required. 

  • Weld using ARC, TIG, and MIG processes; fabricate or repair components, including stainless steel, as needed. 

  • Operate lathe and other workshop equipment; machine parts to specified tolerances. 

  • Perform steelwork, including fabrication and repair of structural components and supports (including stainless steel as applicable). 

  • Carry out piping work and pipe fittings; assemble, weld, and test piping systems. 

  • Assist with overhauls of propulsion and auxiliary systems as directed by supervision. 

  • Complete additional routines and tasks as assigned by supervisor; maintain tools and records of maintenance activities. 

  • Adhere to environmental policies and immediately report any environmental system malfunctions to supervision. 

 

Qualifications & Training 

  • Proven experience in a similar role within Repair and Maintenance essential.  

  • Proficiency with basic machining, welding, and fabrication tools 

  • Valid welding certification desirable 

  • Experience operating a lathe desirable  

  • Prior exposure to international environments strongly preferred 

  • Effective verbal and written communications skills; ability to work with an international staff in a positive and productive manner. 

 

Language Requirements 

  • Ability to speak and write English clearly to understand procedures and communicate with supervisors and crew. 

  • Additional languages are advantageous but not required. 

 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and perform manual tasks; ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; operate in confined spaces and at heights as required. 

  • Vision: Close and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

  • Environmental: Work in a shipboard environment with exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, and hazards; wear appropriate PPE; may require shifts or on-call duties; able to work under pressure and in emergency situations. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and coordination is required to perform duties effectively.
